Sentence Starters To Introduce Evidence

Here'south what I do to teach students how to cite text evidence:

First, I teach my class how to use judgement starters when they cite text prove.

More specifically, I teach them ane sentence starter at the showtime.

For case, I cull one sentence starter and model it every day for i week. During whole grouping instruction, I will explicitly model answering a text-dependent question using this sentence starter:

According to the text, …………………………

This particular judgement starter is the easiest 1 to teach showtime.

Question: The author uses definitions as context clues to help the reader understand what friction means. What did the author define friction as?

The answer should be: According to the text, "Friction is a strength betwixt two surfaces that slows objects downwardly or stops them from moving."

3 Things My Students Learn About Citing Text Evidence

In this response, my students learn iii things:

1. That text bear witness means using the exact words from the text

2. That those words must have quotation marks

3. Citing text evidence with sentence starters makes it much easier

While they are learning, I ask them to highlight the quotation marks and underline the sentence starter. Doing this brings attention to the elements that I desire them to remember.

During that calendar week, I ask my students to use that item sentence starter someday students are citing text evidence. This permits them to employ it over and over, andmore importantly – they larn how to focus on all three elements of their response:

  1. Correctly answering the question.
  2. Using the author'due south verbal words.
  3. Citing information technology correctly using quotation marks.
